Fluid DynamicsModel Colloid-A-Tron (CAT) -Water Conditioner Unit

SHARE

Colloid-A-Tron (CAT) water conditioner units are installed in 40 countries on 5 continents. Many leading companies have used CAT treatment in many countries across the world such as; Ford, Guinness, ICI, Nestle, Carlsberg, Renault and Coca-Cola. These are just a few out of thousands of users since 1973.

Colloid-A-Tron consists of a pipe with a special alloy core inserted inside. The unit comes in different sizes and screwed or flanged as required. In order to prevent scale from forming in a piece of equipment the CAT is installed in the pipe lines which feeds water to it.

The secret of its success is found in the core - its shape, its composition and a combination of the pressure changes and turbulence that the special design causes.

The Colloid-A-Tron operates as a catalyst using the pH rise generated by the alloy to trigger precipitation of calcium carbonate in the bulk of the water forming stable crystals. This result is a water which has less calcium carbonate in solution and a mass of seed crystals which, should the water then be heated, act as sites for further precipitation in preference to adhering to the hot surfaces - thus protecting them from scale.

Your Problem

The formation of scale caused by hard water in pipework and equipment is costly and seriously reduces operating efficiencies. Scaling and its removal manually or by chemicals can cause damage to equipment.

Generally the application of chemicals has been the traditional method of handling these problems - however increasing environmental pressures and restrictions are causing responsible industries and plant operators to look for alternative methods. This method is tested and approved by Jordan University, UKAEE and members of the UKWTA.

Your Answer:

Colloid-A-Tron provides the ideal solution to the problems associated with hard water scaling;

  • it is totally safe to the environment
  • constant supply of treated water
  • requires no shutdowns for maintenance
  • uses no energy or electricity
  • Guaranteed for 10 years
  • Has been shown to produce up to 7 % energy saving
  • Colloid-A-Tron is the world leader in non-chemical water treatment systems.

Colloid-A-Tron selection and installation

The COLLOID-A-TRON is installed in the water lines feeding the equipment that has to be protected. It is sized according to the amount of water flowing through that line. For a given size of CAT there is a minimum flow rate above which it will work effectively. You should select the unit whose minimum flow is nearest to the flow rate through the pipe where you want to install the unit.

Example - Selecting Appropriate Colloid-A-Tron Sizes

You have a piece of equipment which is prone to scale up, and you want to protect it. The size of the pipe feeding cooling water to the machine is 2 inches diameter and, generally by looking at the pump characteristics, you estimate the water flow to be about 10 m3/hr. With reference to the table below you will see that your flow of 10m3 lies between 7.5 and 12.6 in the m3/hr column. You should therefore select the 40 mm unit (1½ inches) which is suitable for a minimum flow of 7.5 m3/hr. A flow of 10m3 m3/hr is too little for a 2 inch unit, whose required minimum flow is 12.6 m3/hr. The selected COLLOID-A-TRON is installed in the cold water line between the pump and the machine.

Colloid-A-Tron (CAT) treatment can be used where-ever scale is created - in both cold water cooling systems and hot water systems. The sketches below show typical installations.

Unique computer prediction - Only Fluid Dynamics has this capability
A unique computer prediction enables possible applications to be screened for suitability. This program took three years to develop and is based on both practical experience and a number of university studies. By adding both the water chemistry and flow details, an accurate assessment of the effectiveness of the treatment can be made and the optimum operating conditions can be recommended.
