GeonorModel H-60 -Handheld Field Vane Shear Tester

SHARE

The Field Vane Shear Test (FVST) is a crucial field instrument and the preferred method for geotechnical engineers performing in-situ soil testing. It is the most commonly used technique for measuring the undrained shear strength (a key aspect of shear strength) of soft clay to stiff clay. For preliminary field inspection of soft clays, utilizing a hand-held vane shear test device is both economical and highly relevant. The method is known for its good repeatability and speed, providing valuable data for planning more detailed subsurface surveys, which may involve a borehole for deeper exploration. While FVST is primarily designed for clay, it can offer complementary insights when assessing fine-grained soils like silt and, to a lesser extent, certain deposits of sand.

A handheld vane tester is an economical and effective solution. It delivers quick, repeatable data and provides valuable information for planning more detailed surveys. However, unverified equipment can lead to inaccurate data. Unreliable tools introduce systematic errors that lead to high costs and design failures when incorporated into the final design  parameters.

Choose the authentic Geonor H-60 to ensure consistent accuracy and trusted results.

The Geonor H-60 is designed for preliminary FVST, providing accurate, reliable initial data.

The authentic Geonor H-60 was originally developed in 1966 by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). It has been continuously improved by Geonor in cooperation with NGI and is trusted by professionals in over 60 countries worldwide.
As proof of this quality, each unit is accompanied by an individual calibration certificate. Don’t risk your project’s success with a low-quality copy – choose the authentic Geonor H-60 for
verified performance and results you can trust.

Geonor H-60 Hand-Held Vane Tester

The Geonor H-60 consists of three exchangeable vanes, extended by 0.5 m rods.

The instrument covers three ranges of measurement, 0-50, 0-100, 0-200 kPa, depending on the size of vane used: 16 x 32 mm, 20 x 40 mm or 25.4 x 50.8 mm.

The peak value is determined by means of the scale-ring, which has to be turned back to zero position before each measurement. The instrument is sufficiently rugged to be used as a handle during penetration and retraction of the vane. To correct for the skin friction of the extension rods, dummy tests are performed with the rods only.
