The following extract from Perry`s Chemical Engineers` Handbook, will give some insight into the sampling and analysis of Hydrocarbons.

"A sampling system will consist of all the equipment required to present an analyser with a clean, representative sample of the process stream and to dispose of that sample. When the analyser is part of an automatic control loop, the reliability of the sampling system is as important as the reliability of the analyser or the control equipment."

Sampling systems have several functions. The sample must be:

  • Withdrawn from the process
  • Transported
  • Conditioned
  • Introduced into the analyser
  • Disposed of

Probably the most common problem in sample-system design is the lack of realistic information concerning the properties of the process material at the sampling point.

Another common problem is the lack of information regarding the conditioning required so that the analyser may utilise the sample without malfunction for long periods of time. Some samples require enough conditioning and treating that the sampling system becomes equivalent to miniature online processing plants.

These systems possess many of the same fabrication, reliability and operating problems as small-scale plants except that the sampling system must generally operate reliaby for much longer periods of time."

Analyser house for large UK refinery (BP Grangemouth). Note SHS enclosure (steam heated), sample recovery unit (steam traced), SRU and fan control panels (Ex d), chiller unit (Ex d) - there was no c.w. available on this site. Utility headers and H&V ducting are just visible.

Inside the CDU2 house - purged enclosures housing hard-wired safety shutdown system (LH enclosure) and PLC system for fan control, house annunciator and handshake with plant DCS. These over-elaborate design constraints were requirements of the contractor`s specification.

Gas Detection & Analysis

For all your gas detection needs Lowe Engineering are able to provide a technically superior and cost effective solution.

Through our relationships with several major gas detection equipment manufacturers we will select the best product on the market place for the application.

Typical systems may include measurement of flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen depletion in enclosed spaces.
