Marine SOx Scrubbers
Marine SOx scrubbers have been developed to abate the sulphur emissions from shipping. Nordkalk`s desulphurisation concept is based on a dry scrubber where granules made from Nordkalk slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) absorb sulphur from the flue gas of the ship. The benefit of the dry scrubber is the absence of emissions to both air and sea, as the process does not generate any scrubbing waters to be discharged into the sea. Furthermore, the structure of the dry scrubber is simple in comparison to other scrubbers.
Nordkalk offers ‘turnkey` absorbent deliveries for dry scrubbers and also recovers the used absorbent simultaneously with the refill. The aim is to recycle 100% of the used absorbent for other applications.
When the EU Sulphur Directive for maritime traffic enters into force, on 1 January 2015, any ship operating on the Baltic Sea, North Sea or the English Channel must comply with the maximum allowable sulphur concentration of 0.1 per cent in airborne emissions (up until 31 Dec 2014 the maximum sulphur concentration is 1%).
