The fireplace, also called chimney if large, is a smoke evacuation system, usually downstream of a fan. Composed of various cylindrical parts, with a diameter proportional to the flow of fumes to be treated, the height varies according to local regulations. The chimneys comes in various construction materials: at low temperatures and with chemically non-aggressive fumes, thinner ordinary steel can be used.

In cases where high temperatures are used with the presence of and acidic effluent (i.e. chemically particularly aggressive), thicker steel or special steel such as corten (weathering steels) or stainless.

The chimneys are used for two reasons, for safety and to economyze the process. For safety, effluent gas (or fumes) from the chimney are dispersed at a certain height above ground, so as to minimize the concentration of pollutants near the plant, during ascent of the fumes heat is exchanged with the walls of the chimney resulting in cooling. The other reason for using a chimney is to exploit the effect of the chimney, namely the additional draw linked to differences in density between the hot gas and the surrounding air, which lightens the work of fans or, in some cases, replaces it.
