There are nearly 1200 Soil Testing Laboratories in India which in the present scenario are not sufficient to cater soil testing needs of the farming sector. Access to these laboratories for farmers is not available due to their long distance from village. Because of lack of knowledge on fertility status of soils there has been indiscriminate use of fertilizers which is considered as one of the major reasons for the loss of soil productivity. There was a long felt need of a quantitative soil testing kit to bring awareness among the farmers and benefits of soil testing that paves the way for balanced use of fertilizer and increase in productivity.

In this direction the ICAR has developed a Digital Soil Testing Fertilizer Recommendation Meter to address the problems of farmers on soil testing. Description of the Instrument: The instrument has five press buttons. UP and DOWN button are used to browse the instrument for different menu items. ENTER button is used to select the nutrient to be measured. ESC button is used to go to the previous screen, RESET button is used to go to the opening menu. Besides there is one electrode assembly for measurement of electrical conductivity (EC).

This soil testing kit would help the farmers test their soil within a short time and at a centre nearby i.e. at Grampanchayat or even at Village level and thus help them to achieve higher yields owing to soil test based optimal fertilizer application.
