EPA CEVRE - Nanofiltration System
Nanofiltration (NF) is a membrane filtration method that falls between reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration (UF) among water treatment technologies. These systems are used to separate very small particles, organic matter, certain salts, and microorganisms found in water. Typically, thanks to their pore sizes around 1 nanometre (nm), they allow water molecules to pass through while retaining larger molecules and ions.
Nanofiltration systems operate by passing water through a semi-permeable membrane under high pressure. The membrane allows water molecules to pass through while retaining most of the salts, viruses, bacteria, and other unwanted substances. As a result of this process, two separate flows are obtained: filtered water (permeate) and waste water (concentrate).
- Drinking Water Treatment: An effective method for reducing water hardness (minerals such as calcium and magnesium) and removing contaminants such as nitrates and pesticides.
- Industrial Processes: Widely used in the food and beverage industry (milk, fruit juice concentration), textile industry for wastewater recovery, and purification of pharmaceutical products.
- Seawater Desalination: It is an economical alternative for treating slightly saline waters because it requires lower pressure than reverse osmosis and retains certain salts.
- High Efficiency: Effectively removes bacteria, viruses, and most organic matter.
- Low Energy Consumption: Operates at lower operating pressures than reverse osmosis systems, thereby reducing energy costs.
- Partial Salt Retention: Allows some beneficial minerals to remain in the water.
- Membrane Fouling: Particle buildup on the membrane surface can reduce system efficiency. Regular maintenance and cleaning are required.
- High Initial Investment Cost: The initial cost is higher compared to other simpler filtration systems.
- Wastewater (Concentrate) Generation: A certain amount of wastewater is produced during the treatment process.
- Nanofiltration systems offer a powerful and flexible solution for improving water quality and meeting various industrial needs.
