SHARE

In comparison to PE, polypropylene (PP) has a higher thermal stability and is therefore a favourable standard material for the use at higher temperatures. Futhermore, it characterises due to high mechanical stability, good chemical resistance and is physiologically harmless. We have different types of polymers in our delivery program: Homopolymers (PP-H), which consist only of propylene-molecules and the two different copolymers where you have ehtylene monomers in blocs (polypropylene block copolymer, PP-B) or statically arranged (polypropylene random copolymer, PP-R). Our pipes are gerenally PP-H material and our fittings PP-R. Both types are stabilised under heat and optimally suitable for the use of pressure pipe systems. The different types can be welded with all current welding procedures. The impact strength depends on the temperature and grow with rising temperature resp. with decreasing temperature. PP-R shows a better impact strength as PP-H.

Behaviour at radation strain

Against radiation of high energy, PP is generally not durable resistant. At effect of high energy rays on polypropylene, it may come to a temporary resistance increase due to cross-linking of the molecular structure. But at durable radiation strain, it comes to a rupture of the molecular chains and therefore by the damage of the material to a serious resistance decrease. This behaviour has to be taken into account by a reducing factor which has to be determined experimentally.

Behaviour at UV-radiation

Grey polypropylene pipes are not UV-stable so they must be adequately protected. If an effective protection is not possible, an outdoor use is still possible acc. to DVS 2210-1. It is furthermore possible to compensate the arising damage of the surface by a corresponding wall thickness addition as the damage only occurs on the surface. The wall thickness addition may not be less than 2mm acc. to DVS. The period of use is then limited to 10 years.

Physiological non-toxicity

Polypropylene complies with the relevant food stuff regulations (acc. to BGA and KTW-guidelines). Furthermore, the PP pipes and fittings are tested and certified for potable water.

Chemical resistance

Basically PP is resistant against a variety of acids and bases. Alkalis, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid are only some example against what PP is resistant. However, against hydrocarbons PP is only conditionally resistant, as it can come to a swelling of >3%. Due to this reason, PP is not capable for benzine or other fuels. The same apply for free chlorine and ozon. As PP is resistance against high temperatures, it is also ideal for installation in pickling lines, the chemical industry and also for high abrasive medium. But the chemical resistance is always a combination between the operating temperature, the operating pressure and possible external stress, thus any limitation can arise. The chemical resistance list is a first index. For special applications please do not hesitate to contact our technicians.
