RDT - Model MSND -Microstructured Semiconductor Neutron Detector
The MSND is a core technology developed as an alternative to He-3 for thermal neutron detection. MSNDs can be configured in custom or RDT standard configurations (e.g. Domino) to provide compact, high efficiency neutron detectors that maximize SWAP-C parameters. Detector’s based on MSND technology can be implemented in handheld, wearable, stationary, and mobile detection systems.

One of the key components to advancing the neutron detection efficiency and increased counting efficiency, is the recent advances in high-aspect ratio deep etching techniques of a common thin-film semiconductor diode neutron detector (MSND). Neutron detector applications include those for homeland security (e.g., border screening), fundamental research (e.g., neutron scattering beamlines), and industrial monitoring (e.g., personnel monitoring, water content in soil). Solid-state neutron detectors provide an alternative to the He-3 based neutron detectors, maintaining a high thermal-neutron detection efficiency, at a fraction of the volume, mass, voltage, and power required from gas or liquid detectors.
Solid-State Neutron Detection Applications: homeland security (e.g., border screening), fundamental research (e.g., neutron scattering beamlines), and industrial monitoring (e.g., personnel monitoring, water content in soil). Solid-state neutron detectors provide an alternative to the 3He-based detectors, maintaining a high thermal-neutron detection efficiency, at a fraction of the volume, mass, voltage, and power required from gas or liquid detectors. Recommend AC coupling to electronic readout circuit.
The MSND® technology implements Li-6 conversion to yield a thermal neutron detection efficiency of 30%. Optimum HDPE moderator for Cf-252 neutron source at 1-m is 3-4 cm in front and 3-6 cm behind the MSND® sensor. Recommend AC coupling to electronic readout circuit.
The radiation detection industry has grown over the past 50 years, due to the progression of understanding and uses of radiation in both academics and industry; with the last decade inviting concerns of improved and continued homeland security and responses to industrial accidents such as the Fukushima meltdown. In response to this growth, RDT has developed MSND® technology that can be used for numerous applications in numerous industries.
