HilgenbergSample Tubes

SHARE

Our sample tubes are used for X-ray fine structure analysis of single crystals, powder specimens, and liquid crystals. The extremely thin-walled capillaries permit the analysis of minute samples sealed in a gas and moisture proof environment. Similarly, the wall thickness of only about 10 µm makes the tubes particularly suitable for high-precision measurements. Thanks to the wide funnel at the upper end, samples can be filled conveniently into tubes even with the smallest diameter.

Our test tubes are manufactured of various types of glass with different linear absorption coefficients, so that a suitable tube can be found for practically every application. High quality standards are maintained during production, which can also be adapted to suit individual customer requirements.

For work with crystals that are sensitive to temperature, humidity, and air, we provide a special crystal preparation and filling unit that is perfectly matched to our sample tubes.

We can supply a micro torch for melting the ends of our sample tubes, as well as zirconium oxide blades complete with holder. For details on both products, see Accessories & tools.

Hilgenberg`s crystal preparation and filling unit according to Dr. Scheidsteger© is a glass device for transferring sensitive crystals easily from the crystallization dish into capillaries.

The entire unit consists of a cooling vessel and the actual filling device that is an integral part of the cooling vessel. Depending on requirements, the unit can be used with or without cooling.

The unit is evacuated by means of a high-vacuum pump, and is vented via a two-way cock with olive. Crystals are filled into the unit through the filling opening. In this way, the unit remains closed during the entire filling operation.

The crystals are prepared via a side opening fitted with a rubber membrane lock. The operating sequence for the unit is described in a detailed manual.

We supply a wide range of sample tubes for use with this device.

Advantages of the crystal preparation and filling unit

  • As many crystals as required are filled in sequentially, simply by changing the capillary.
  • Air and temperature-sensitive crystals as well as solvate crystals are selected under a microscope, prepared, and then filled into capillaries.
  • The crystals are transferred directly from the supply vessel (e.g. Schlenk vessel) into the capillary via the preparation chamber, and without exposure to air.
  • The integrated cooling system also permits temperature-sensitive crystals to be filled in safely in the laboratory.
  • Simple operation and handling.

In cooperation with the University of Paderborn, we have developed special glass capillaries with an extra large diameter for examining macro molecules and proteins. These capillaries can serve as substitute for expensive sapphire chambers. For examining macro molecules by means of synchrotron radiation, we have developed a capillary with a diameter of 4,1 mm, and a wall thickness of only 50 µm. Other dimensions between 2,1 and 5,2 mm are also available.

Thin-walled tubes offer the following advantages:

  • low absorption
  • good thermal conductance
  • minimum dispersion angle
  • uniformly thin wall thickness
  • low weight

These special sample tubes are particularly well suited for flow measurements. The wall thickness of the measuring section in the middle of the capillary is only about 10 µm. On the other hand, the sides have thicker walls, which permits easier installation in a liquid flow circuit.

Thin connecting hoses have proved to be most suitable for the adaptation of these capillaries.
The hoses are attached to both funnels using liquid Teflon (PTFE).

Here are the main specifications of our double-funnel sample tubes:

  • Outside funnel diameter: 3,0 mm
  • Inside funnel diameter: 2,4 mm
  • Overall length: 80 mm
  • Diameter of measuring section: 0,5 - 0,7 - 1,0 mm
  • Length of measuring section: 30 mm
  • Material: Borosilicate glass (0500)
