WestonSoil Vapor Extraction (SVE)

SHARE

WESTON pioneered the development and use of soil vapor extraction (SVE), as an innovative technology for soil remediation. In SVE, a vacuum is used to remove volatile and some semi-volatile organic contaminants from polluted soil. WESTON has developed its own proprietary SVE vent system (Patents No. 5,106,232 and 5,106,217)and has applied this technology for bioventing degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons and other organics.

Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant—WESTON first applied SVE technology in the early 1980s at the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Minnesota for the remediation of six solvent disposal pits and a nearby industrial waste landfill. Using this SVE technology saved the U.S. Army over $20 million at this site as compared to the cost for other, more conventional remedial technologies.

Pease Air Force Base—WESTON designed, installed, and currently operates four SVE systems, using both dual-phase and multiphase vacuum extraction to treat VOCs in the saturated and unsaturated zones. We also installed an SVE system with 170 vents over a 5-acre site to remove TCE, petroleum by-products, and light, nonaqueous-phase liquid (LNAPL).

WESTON also installed a field-scale SVE system to determine the effectiveness of SVE compared to SVE combined with air sparging to treat soil contaminated with jet fuel; the contaminant mass removal rate increased by a factor of 20 by using air sparging, stabilizing at 8 kg/day, compared to 4 kg/day for SVE alone.

Georgia World Congress Center—Saved $4 million by changing the remediation method from excavation and treatment to the installation of an SVE system; complete the installation of 180 vents and 5 treatment plans 1 month early under an aggressive schedule.
