SoilMoisture / Stevens - Soil Permeameter
A permeameter is a laboratory device used to measure the permeability (or hydraulic conductivity) of soils and other porous materials —typically soils, rocks, or membranes—to water or other fluids. A permeameter measures how easily water passes through a material. Water flow through soil can be measured using a permeameterA soi permeameter is used to determines how easily water can flow through a material is crucial for applications in civil engineering, environmental science, agriculture, and hydrology.
• Agriculture: Determines how quickly soil drains after rain or irrigation.
• Civil Engineering / Construction: Helps assess soil stability, drainage, and foundation safety.
• Stormwater Design: Crucial in designing infiltration systems, swales, and retention basins.
• Groundwater Modeling: Used in simulations of recharge and aquifer permeability, recharge, and flow.
• Septic Systems: Evaluates how well soil can absorb effluent in leach fields.
Both constant head and falling head permeameters are used to measure hydraulic conductivity (permeability) of soils, based on the principles of Darcy’s Law. However, they differ in their setup and are suited to different types of soil. In general, constant head is used when water flows readily and rapidly, while falling head is used for slower, more controlled flow in less permeable soils.
- Constant Head Permeameter: Used for coarse-grained soils like sand and gravel. Water is allowed to flow through the soil sample under a constant hydraulic head, and the flow rate is measured to determine permeability.
Falling Head Permeameter: Suitable for fine-grained soils like silts and clays. Water is allowed to flow through the soil sample, and the decreasing water level (head) over time is recorded to calculate permeability.

The Guelph Permeameter is an easy-to-use instrument to quickly and accurately measure in-situ hydraulic conductivity. Accurate evaluation of soil hydraulic conductivity, soil sorptivity, and matrix flux potential can be made in all types of soils. The equipment can be transported, assembled, and operated easily by one person. Measurements can be made in 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on soil type, and require only about 2.5 liters of water.
