Technicalia - Passive Chimney Filter
A passive chimney filter is a device used to remove odors in facilities that are part of the sanitary sewage infrastructure. Chimney filters are most often used in sewage pumping stations, as the frequently changing sewage levels in the pumping station pits cause air to escape into the atmosphere, which can cause unpleasant odors in the surrounding area. The neutralizer is equipped with an activated carbon cartridge through which air flows and is purified. The device is a passive neutralizer, meaning it does not have an electric fan. Air flow is forced by gravity – either through the pressure difference inside and outside the pit or by sewage flowing into the facility, displacing air from the sewers, pumping stations, or pits.
Passive chimney filters are designed for installation in openings located in concrete well covers or next to the well (after connecting a ventilation pipe). The opening is sealed with a tight transition to smooth-walled pipes with an outer diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the chimney. When using passive odor removal devices, care must be taken to prevent air from escaping through other building components (e.g., openings in pumping station covers to control dampers) or leaks (e.g., manholes). If leaking manholes exist, additional under-manhole filters should be used . If the ventilated facility cannot be fully sealed, consider using carbon filters with a fan, as only these filters can force all odorous air through the activated carbon bed.
Passive chimney filters are considered effective devices for removing air pollution from sewage or other sources emitting dangerous hydrogen sulfide. Thanks to the use of a passive chimney filter, the air released outside the building is free of toxic and harmful substances.
These devices are particularly useful in locations where there is no access to electricity, making it impossible to use an electrically powered carbon filter (fan-equipped devices). They are also suitable for locations where air pollutants do not contain high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, which is responsible for the unpleasant odor of rotten sewage.
We especially recommend the use of our carbon filters to managers of sewerage networks and sewage treatment plants, manufacturers of sewage pumping stations, and manufacturers and contractors of municipal sewage treatment plants.
