Telonics - Model TAV Series -Argos Avian Transmitters
FromTelonics, Inc.
The estimates of operational life above are based on 250mW, 3-byte Argos transmissions with a 60-second repetition rate at 10°C. Argos transmissions are typically duty-cycled for an average of closer to the 4-hours/day example. Dimensions are exclusive of antenna or additional attachment options. Weights include a lightweight antenna, but other antenna options and attachment options may add weight.

- TAV models operate through the Argos System. This satellite-based system provides global coverage and particularly good performance in the polar regions. Animal locations are calculated using the Doppler-shift in frequency of the transmitter’s uplink transmission. (These units do not use GPS for location determination.)
- Mortality, activity, temperature, and low-voltage sensors are available with all these models. Data can be collected according to user-defined parameters and schedules and transmitted through Argos.
- Models equipped with a salt-water-switch can collect and transmit data related to dives underwater. The salt-water-switch also suppresses transmissions while underwater and synchronizes transmission with surfacing.
- Argos transmissions can be duty-cycled to extend battery life, and to schedule transmissions when the best overpasses are predicted. A real-time clock/calendar controls all timing functions.
- All these models can be programmed using Telonics Product Programmer (TPP). TPP makes it possible for users to program their own systems and simulate performance of the system prior to deployment.
- On-board sensors can be activated or deactivated. Data collection regimes and schedules can be altered. Sensor data can be added or deleted from Argos transmissions.
- Argos ID codes, transmission frequencies, transmission power levels, and transmission schedules can all be modified.
- Data retrieved through Argos are processed using the Telonics Data Converter (TDC). TDC provides complete data decoding of Argos DS files, including location and sensor data, and provides for plotting of locations in Google Earth.
- Units are powered by primary battery. They are turned on or off using a magnetic switch. When turned off, these ST-26 based units consume less than 5.3µA.
- Units can be refurbished to their original condition by Telonics.
- The TAV-2627 model is packaged in a hermetically sealed canister. The other models are enclosed in a polymeric casting. The Argos antenna assembly includes a strain-relief to avoid breakage.
