Aqua Color - Water Quality Monitoring Sensor for Festivals and Sport Events
At festivals and sport events, temporary water supplies are realized in order to fullfill the demand for clean drinking water. In order to safeguard the quality of the drinking water during these events, water samples are taken and analyzed on a regular basis. Developments in society have led to a large demand for simple methods to monitor drinking water quality real time and inline. This is exactly the reason why we developed the Aqua Color Festival Sensor.
How does the Aqua Color Festival sensor work?
The Aqua Color Festival Sensor is installed in the drinking water distribution system and measures following parameters:
- The water temperature.
- The water pressure.
- Changes in water composition by measuring the light absorption at 3 different wavelengths.
As a result, the Aqua Color Festival Sensor is able to check if the water temperature does not become too high, which may be a problem in case of still water, if the water pressure is still sufficiently high or if there are undesired changes in water quality. Of course, the sensor is not able to measure all changes in water quality but it is, amongst others, able to "see" turbidity, color changes, biofilm formation and the presence of algae in the water.
Practical experience with the Aqua Color Festival Sensor at the EC Soccer 2016 in France
A first prototype of the Aqua Color Festival Sensor was succesfully applied by MTD at the European Championship Soccer 2016 to monitor the water quality at the stadiums in Lille and Paris.
Meanwhile, we gained a lot of experience with our sensors and this led to our current sensor system that also measures water pressure and temperature and that is even more sensitive for changes in water quality.
By installing sensors at a limited number of strategical points in the water distributin system and by showing the measurements real time on a dashboard, in which alarms pop up real time, the water distribution system can be guarded very efficiently.
Cloud service with dashboard and alarm
After a development traject of several years, we now have a cloud service with dashboard functionality and alarm in which the measurements of all our sensors can be monitored real time.
In addition to our sensors we can provide 2 types of service:
- A cloud service based on mobile internet (4G SIM card with data bundle) to which our sensors are connected.
- A LoRaWAN cloud service inspired by "The Things Network"
The cloud service based on LoRaWAN is especially feasible in remote areas with moderate or bad coverage or where the sensors have to communicate with a central gateway over a large distance up to about 10 km.
