Arctic Engineering Services
Arctic and subarctic conditions present unique challenges. From offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Shannon & Wilson has advanced the field of foundation design and construction in permafrost conditions. We have designed a variety of foundations and earth structures and pioneered the design and use of a passively refrigerated gravel pad foundation using flat-loop thermosyphons. We model thermal conditions using state-of-the-practice software with consistant and accurate results.

Shannon & Wilson’s arctic engineering services include:
- Geotechnical investigations
- Instrumentation and monitoring
- Thermal modeling
- Testing for soil engineering properties
- Permafrost foundation design
We have also performed investigations of underground petroleum spills and designed and operated site cleanup measures, including experience in free-product recovery, groundwater treatment, vapor extraction, air sparging, and bioremediation in Alaskan arctic and subarctic conditions. We've conducted contaminant characterization and remedial design at many sites underlain by permafrost and have designed and installed pressurized monitoring wells through permafrost, in which air pressure is used to depress the water in the well below the bottom of the permafrost, thus preventing the well from freezing.
