Shannon & Wilson was founded in 1954 as a geotechnical engineering firm. We offer a complete staff of pro­fessional geotechnical engineers, geologists, technicians, and support personnel. We are adept at developing project scope and planning exploration programs, directing field drilling and sampling operations, completing laboratory test­ing, and performing engineering analysis, all of which result in practical design and construction recommendations. We incorporate sustainability into our geotechnical design through the reuse of materials and the implementation of well-designed erosion and sedimentation control programs.

We work with local, state, and federal governments; utilities; oil companies; railroads; developers; bankers; and the insurance industry. With years of experience in subsurface site investigations, Shannon & Wilson is a leader in identifying the nature and extent of environmental impacts to groundwater, surface water, soils, air, and sediment. We develop solutions based on a thorough understanding of the regulatory, financial, technical, and operational constraints confronting our clients. From environmental site assessments to the intricacies of complex site remediation, we engineer cost-effective solutions to meet our clients` needs.

Arctic and subarctic conditions present unique challenges.  From offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Shannon & Wilson has advanced the field of foundation design and construction in permafrost conditions. We have designed a variety of foundations and earth structures and pioneered the design and use of a passively refrigerated gravel pad foundation using flat-loop thermosyphons.  We model thermal conditions using state-of-the-practice software with consistant and accurate results.

We assist owners and agencies with asset management and life cycle performance planning for a variety of features such as tunnels, retaining walls, levees, landslides, rockfall sites, and roadway pavements. We offer diverse experience in the management of performance risk due to physical deterioration or natural hazards. We incorporate both engineering and financial constraints into our asset management plans, giving clients the information needed to identify and prioritize repair or replacement costs.

Shannon & Wilson excels in construction observation and management.  We work on-site with contractors and subcontractors, helping them identify and resolve construction problems.  This close coordination has been key to our success in engineering cost-effective, constructible designs.  We review plans and specifications and monitor compliance with them.  Often we act as the owner’s site representative, overseeing construction, approving invoices and quantities, reviewing change orders, and providing field direction.

Shannon & Wilson helps clients develop and protect ground- and surface-water resources.   Properly managing our water resources is critical for the long-term stability and growth of our communities and protection of our environment.  We provide practical, defensible solutions for water-related challenges.  Our clients include municipalities, major water districts, and industry.

Shannon & Wilson operates several full-service laboratories.  Our in-house, soils and construction-materials laboratories are staffed and equipped to test soil, rock, asphalt, and concrete.  Data provided by these laboratories assist engineers during project design and help determine specification conformance during project construction.  Our ACI and NICET certified technicians perform laboratory testing for a wide variety of government, commercial, and industrial clients and in support of our own engineering projects. We have laboratories validated to perform materials testing for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and accredited by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

We develop economically and technically feasible solutions to the most challenging mine development and reclamation projects and sites.  Our services begin with resource evaluation, where we delineate mineral deposits and help develop effective recovery processes.  We offer planning and permitting services that include establishing background conditions and identifying potential environmental concerns early in the planning process.  Our development services include providing geotechnical investigation and design recommendations.
