Bins and Collections Services
City of Melbourne provides a waste service to rate payers, including a 120 litre general waste bin and 240 litre recycling bin, collected once a week.
Most businesses generate more waste than this, and need to arrange a collection service from a private company with a waste collection permit.
Recycling waste must be separated from landfill and collected through a recycling service. All bins must be stored on private property and only presented on the street for collections. Learn more about our central city waste laws.
The amount and type of waste produced by your business will determine the size and number of bins you need, and how often they should be collected.
Many businesses need a daily collection of waste, especially if there is a lot of food or other perishable garbage that can attract vermin and produce odour. Private waste companies can do a waste assessment to determine the bins and collection schedule that you need.
There are strict central city waste laws that govern bin storage and collections.
Many items are recyclable but are not suitable to go into your recycling bin. If the item is recyclable, visit Planet Ark’s Business Recycling website to find collection and support services with over 6,000 recycling drop off locations for over 80 materials.
Cooking oil waste can be stored in containers or drums and must be collected from inside your property.

Council does not provide a collection service to businesses for bulky rubbish items. Businesses are responsible for their own waste and need to use a private contractor to remove these items.
