The ecological status of the water bodies can be determined by the two main parameters- phosphorus content and the chlorophyll content. The ecological status therefore can be determined from the concentration of these two factors. Analytical Parameters for determining the tropic status of water bodies.
Trophic State Phosphorus (µg/L) Chlorophyll (µg/L)
Oligotrophic 4 to 10 1.0 to 2.5
Mesotrophic 10 to 35 2.5 to 8.0
Eutrophic 35 to 100 8.0 to 25.0
Hypertrophic > 100 >25.0
A comparison of the values given above with the values for phosphorus and chlorophyll of many lakes in India, confirms that the water bodies have become highly eutrophic and needs urgent intervention and revival.
