Certain types of bird surveys can only be carried out in a narrow seasonal window each year, so if your business requires a bird survey, contact us today to discuss your site and requirements in more detail so you don't miss the seasonal window - or you could have to wait for another year!
More detailed information on the more commonly required types of bird survey is given below.
Nesting Bird Check
This may be required if actions that could disturb or harm nesting birds would occur during the bird breeding season, which is typically taken as being from the beginning of March to the end of August (although the habitats and likely species on site have to be taken into account - some species nest earlier - Blackbirds for example, can be laying eggs in February, and some can still be nesting later - young Swallows, for example, can still be in the nest in September). In this situation, in order to ensure compliance with the Wildlife and Countryside Act, it is necessary to check whether birds are actively nesting in the area of expected impact and to take impact avoidance measures as appropriate.
The nesting bird check typically involves a visit to the site by a trained and experienced bird surveyor who will carry out both a visual check for bird nests and a survey looking for bird behaviour indicating nesting activity. Following on from this, a report is produced on the findings, the legal implications, and as appropriate suggested precautions and mitigation advice on actions to ensure compliance with The Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Breeding Bird Survey
This type of survey is typically used on sites where there is considered to be an elevated risk of a breeding bird assemblage of significant conservation value being present that could be affected by the proposed activity.
Survey would follow standard guidelines and involve at least five morning site visits between late March and early June, recording the bird species present and the numbers and activities on site. This would be used to establish the patterns of use of the site by birds during the peak nesting season.
Typical outcomes from such a survey would be as follows:
- If no bird assemblage of significant conservation value was found, and the survey was able to gain sufficient access to information, then you could submit the bird survey report to the Local Planning Authority or other relevant body to demonstrate that your activities would not be likely to significantly impact on the breeding of rare and declining bird species.
- If a bird assemblage of significant conservation value was found, then we would discuss your development or other proposed activity with you to see if there is a practical way that any likely impact be avoided, which would save you time and money compared with having to undertake mitigating or compensating actions if likely impact to bird conservation could not be avoided. If you were to agree to an effective method to avoid likely impact, then that method would be included in your bird survey report for you to submit to the Local Planning Authority or other relevant body to demonstrate how you could ensure your activities would not be likely to impact on the breeding of rare or declining bird species.
- If likely deleterious impact on bird conservation could not be avoided, then the bird survey report would typically include a mitigation and compensation Method Statement for approval by the Local Planning Authority and their ecology consultees.

Winter Bird Survey
This type of survey is typically used on site where there is considered to be an elevated reisk of a wintering bird assemblage of significant conservation value being present that could be affected by the proposed activity.
Surveys for birds would follow standard guidelines and involve twice-monthly survey visits between October and March, recording wintering bird species present and the numbers and activities on site. This would be used to establish the patterns of use of the site by birds during the winter season.
Typical outcomes from such a survey would be as follows:
- If no bird assemblage of significant conservation value was found, and the survey was able to gain sufficient access to information, then you could submit the bird survey report to the Local Planning Authority or other relevant body to demonstrate that your activities would not be likely to significantly impact on the winter habitat of rare and declining bird species.
