C1 economy

SHARE

CO2 levels in the atmosphere have balooned during our lifetimes, accelerating global warming. This is a challenge that VTT has addressed by replacing fossil fuels with biofuels and by developing bio-based products to substitute petrochemicals. Biomass resources are, however, limited. If you would like to broaden your raw material base, we can help you leverage CO2 and other C1 compounds as feed stocks—compounds that come from recycled waste, flue gases or the atmosphere.

Towards a circular economy

VTT develops sustainable solutions for a closed loop economy. We exploit industrial and post-consumer waste streams and atmospheric CO2 as feedstocks for chemicals, raw materials and energy products.

From threat to business opportunity

In the decades to come we will transition to a zero-waste society that reuses materials over and over again. Atmospheric CO2 will no longer be a threat to the planet, but rather a valuable resource that is captured, stored and utilized to manufacture chemicals, energy products and materials. Innovations that VTT is working on today will enable this scenario to come to pass tomorrow.

Turnkey technology solutions

For decades VTT has been developing key enabling technologies that provide not only bio-based value chain solutions but also products and processes that help bring a circular economy into being.

Our thermo-chemical platform is one such technology. It can convert solid wastes, such as recycled plastics, to C1 intermediates. These can be further converted to various products by means of sustainable chemical conversion or microbial cell factories. Furthermore, our photosynthetic organisms can turn atmospheric CO2 into value-added products by adding nothing more than sunlight or electricity.

From laboratory to pilot project, new concepts in carbon capture and reuse are waiting to be designed, modelled and tested.
