The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) is a mandatory government scheme aimed at encouraging large public and private sector organisations to become more energy efficient by reducing their CO2 emissions.  This scheme will help the government achieve its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% in 2050.

What are the CRC qualification criteria?

  • Phase 1:participation is compulsory for all organisations with a Half-Hourly metered site who used over 6000 megawatt-hours (MWh) in the 2008 calendar year
  • Phase 2:participation is compulsory for all organisations with a Half-Hourly metered site who used over 6000 megawatt-hours (MWh) in the year 2012/2013

How does CRC work?

The scheme is split into phases:

  • Phase 1: From 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2014
  • Phase 2: From 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2019

All qualifying organisations must register as participants on the Environment Agency website. Upon registration, participants must monitor and report their business CO2 emissions every year.  The CRC registry then uses this information to calculate their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Organisations will have to purchase allowances for every CO2 emitted, therefore the more you emit, the more allowances you have to buy. At the beginning organisations can purchase allowances to cover all their emissions, however in April 2013, the government introduced a ‘cap and trade’ scheme to limit the number of allowances available for purchase.

Failure to meet the obligations under the scheme could result in prosecutions or fines.

It important to know that being on a Green Energy Tariff does not exempt you from participating in the CRC scheme, as CRC is an energy efficiency scheme, their concern is how much energy you use rather than where it comes from.

How can CRC benefit your company?

The ultimate aim of CRC is to improve energy efficiency and to reduce carbon efficiency, however in doing so, your organisation also benefits from the scheme, as improving your energy efficiency will result in lower energy bills and enhance your reputation.

How can we help?
