Cooling towers are potentially significant sources of Legionnaires` disease because of their ability to spread aerosol over a wide area. Consequently, they come under increased surveillance. Cooling systems for industrial processes and air conditioning units operate at 35°C - 45°C, the ideal temperature for Legionella bacteria proliferation, and the towers are natural air scrubbers, providing nutrients for bacterial growth.
