Drainage Infrastructure Services
Drainage is fundamental to the provision of a sustainable environment in towns and cities. HR Wallingford can address drainage issues to help prevent frequent flooding, provide an environment resilient to extreme events and protect water courses from combined sewerage discharges and from stormwater runoff. We are at the forefront of research into SuDS and the development of SuDS guidance.
The hydraulic performance of drainage systems can be assessed using traditional 1D and newer 2D modelling techniques, as well as advanced risk based methods. This requires experienced engineers and drainage modellers familiar with tools such as InfoWorks CS 2D.
With the growing need to meet environmental concerns, the concept of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) is becoming increasingly important. The move towards the use of SuDS requires a shift in the approaches to drainage with a wider range of skills than simply an understanding of hydraulics.
Drainage modelling
- Assessing the hydraulic performance of city wide drainage systems
- The impacts of drainage on rivers (Water Framework Directive)
- Audits of computer models and scheme proposals for clients and regulators
- Risk based analysis of drainage systems
Sustainable drainage
- Research into the performance of SuDS
- Providing guidance and developing standards for the industry
- Drainage design for developers, including greenfield and retrofit use of SuDS
- Rainwater harvesting for stormwater control
- Whole life costing of SuDS
Research and guidance
- Tools, including web based facilities, for meeting National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and other drainage design requirements
- Manuals on drainage and SuDS (principal authors for the CIRIA SuDS Manual)
- Research for UKWIR and others into areas of commercial risk, or improved guidance for the UK water industry
