All products and services have an impact on the environment, whether it is during their production, their usage or their disposal. The precise nature of this impact is complex and difficult to quantify, but the potential magnitude of the problem is clear. At the same time, the continuity of economic growth and prosperity is largely determined by the production and consumption of products.
Initially, environmental performance in relation to products had tended to focus on the main point sources of pollution, such as industrial emissions, or on issues related to waste management. However, it has now become increasingly evident that the entire product life cycle must be taken into consideration, including the usage phase. This should guarantee that environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle are considered as a whole and, therefore, that they are not simply shifted from one stage of the life cycle to another.
