Sustainable Building is that which throughout its entire life cycle, including very particularly the design phase, crystallizes the three social, economic and environmental dimensions of Sustainable Development in a balanced manner.

It`s the purchase or contracting of products and/or services that not only takes economic or technical aspects into consideration but also the environmental impact of those aspects throughout their whole life cycle. This implies that, in addition to taking into account environmental performance of the materials and products used or acquired (including their use and their manufacturing process), the methods and procedures used in the execution of the contracts and the environmental performance of the suppliers and the manufacturers should also be taken into account.

All products and services have an impact on the environment, whether it is during their production, their usage or their disposal.  The precise nature of this impact is complex and difficult to quantify, but the potential magnitude of the problem is clear.  At the same time, the continuity of economic growth and prosperity is largely determined by the production and consumption of products.
