Ecosystems and Ecology Modelling And Assessment Services
From Environment
HR Wallingford carries out ecological research, modelling and assessment of potential impacts of natural and human induced change on the marine and freshwater environment. We interpret the consequences of change and provide management advice, informed by an ecosystems approach.
Ecological modelling
Ecological modelling
We understand the process interactions between water flows, sediments, water quality and ecology that lie at the heart of an ecosystems approach. We combine predictive models of hydraulics, sediments and chemistry with ecological models for use in river, estuary, coastal and marine studies.
Our tools are supported by the latest scientific evidence and are used to inform environmental impact assessment (EIA). We invest in new research in ecological modelling, both in partnership with universities and in our own projects.
Biodiversity and conservation
HR Wallingford delivers science and policy support to help you meet the evolving requirements of conservation policy and legislation.
Climate change impacts
We have developed and implemented methods for vulnerability, risk and impact assessment to consider the effect of climate change on the natural environment. Our approaches provide structured assessment frameworks and leading-edge risk modelling.
Conservation
We support conservation activities through our work on catchment management, ‘Habitats Regulations Assessment’, marine and coastal zone management, integrated water resource planning and land management planning.
Ecosystem management
We provide advice to support management decisions that influence ecology and ecosystems. This builds on our strong understanding of the interactions between the natural and the human environment.
Ecological impacts
We research and assess the impacts that natural and human pressures have on ecosystems. This requires a clear understanding of:
- the links between hydromorphology, estuarine and marine processes and ecology;
- the impacts of diffuse pollution; and
- the impacts of marine works such as dredging on the ecological environment.
Ecosystems and socio-economics
We recognise that ecosystems provide valuable services and benefits for society. The social and economic implications of changes in the natural environment are important to consider in the short and long term. We provide analysis and interpretation of the social and economic costs and benefits of strategies and projects.
Sustainable development
HR Wallingford understands the implications of sustainable development throughout our work. We provide policy and project-level expertise that supports the protection of ecosystems now and for future generations.
