Services Overview
Timely and safe execution
Industrial plants are constructed with components sourced from specialized suppliers located throughout the world. Each plant requires a number of oversized and heavy components to be shipped to the construction site. These need to arrive in the right order and at the right time. Shipping of oversized and heavy cargo requires specific expertise, as infrastructure limitations create bottlenecks that demand alternative transport approaches. An optimal route must be developed, often consisting of a chain of different transport modes. This implies a number of handover points, which require close coordination to reduce the risk of delays. Besides all this, especially in case of cross border transports, a lot of paperwork must be handled. By sourcing this combination of services through a ‘factory-to-foundation’ contract, a single contractor is charged with responsibility for the whole trajectory.
This approach is particularly beneficial as more industries move to modular construction techniques. A steel plant in South American may require modules from the United States, South East Asia and Europe, while a mine in Southern Africa will receive components from China and Scandinavia. Each project has a carefully mapped critical path and the transport and installation of oversized and heavy components are vital elements within that plan.
To ensure key components arrive on time and do not have a negative impact on the project’s schedule, it is important to work with a heavy lifting and transport specialist that has the equipment and logistical experience to manage all the transport and installation requirements for the plant. With one party to oversee the entire logistical operation, and one point of contact for the client, the whole chain is streamlined, minimizing the number of handover points, reducing or eliminating demurrage charges and optimizing logistical efficiency.
Logistical expertise
From storage tanks to reactors, and from heat exchangers to compression units, the large and heavy items that are part of an industrial facility present a vital element in the total challenge facing constructors. Their size and weight will determine the transportation options and engineering solutions needed to safely and efficiently bring them to the installation point. With Mammoet’s engineering expertise, fleet of equipment, and vast experience of coordinating logistical chains for factory-to-foundation services, safe and timely execution can be managed, with the potential to save time and cost.
Transporting oversized and heavy cargo requires specific logistical skills, as infrastructure limitations create bottlenecks that demand alternative approaches. An optimal route must be developed, often consisting of a chain of different transport modes. For instance, larger items may need to travel by barge or be shipped across continents, while at the same time packages of medium-sized and smaller items can use rail and road transport. Whatever the route and transport option, handover points along the way require close co-ordination to reduce the risk of delays. Paperwork including border crossings and applications for permits in the case of abnormal loads are key elements of any logistics plan. All of these factors and more will be covered by Mammoet’s project managers and logistics planners under a factory-to-foundation service contract.
Integrated approach
We act as the main contractor for the total chain of activities that need to take place: composing the optimal route by performing the necessary route studies and obtaining permits, managing the total supply chain through third party sourcing or in-house execution of lifting, load-outs and load-ins and the transport itself over road, rail and water ways. In the case of international transport, handling paperwork and dealing with border customs is yet another integral link of the task chain. This ensures that all big and heavy components arrive safely and on time at the installation point.
Customized solutions
Sometimes, the specific requirements of the installation call for innovative engineering in addition to the factory-to-foundation logistical service. When Samsung needed to ship 50 heavy components to a site near the town of Bulo-Bulo in Bolivia they were faced with an obstacle. A tunnel on the route was too small for the components to pass. Their other option was a vast overland journey by road. Mammoet’s experience, combined with our in-house-designed MTC-15 crane, unlocked a faster, more secure alternative route. This different approach used barges to move the components to a small port on the border with Brazil. By using Mammoet’s specialized MTC-15 crane, the port’s quay side was effectively transformed into a heavy lift terminal. This enabled the components to be safely lifted from the barges onto trailers to complete their journey to the installation point by road. The combination of expertise and equipment delivered a safer, swifter and more cost-effective logistics operation for our client.
Mammoet has broad and diverse hands-on experience with a wide range of transport modes. We have built up extensive knowledge of transport regulations in countries around the globe, as well as long-standing relationships with the relevant transport agencies. We own the widest and most modern range of equipment available for lifting and transport. Our equipment’s reliability and safety are ensured through strict maintenance programs. In specific cases, where we do not have our own equipment available, we can rely on a worldwide and well-tested network of partners. If needed, Mammoet offers storage and trans-shipment services through our own or third party terminals. And all this with one purpose in mind: achieving uptime for our clients’ facilities, as soon as possible.
