Measures Against PollutionClimate changes, population growth, urbanization and the altered use of land, industrial and agricultural activities are some of the factors contributing to water pollution. Such a large proportion of the world`s deposits of groundwater and surface water is now so polluted that it poses a threat to humans and aquatic organisms.

NIVA has wide ranging and multidisciplinary expertise in water related disciplines that enables us to identify contaminants in water and determine their consequences for nature and society. We develop, recommend and certify environmental technology.

Norway has committed itself to adhere to the stipulations of the EU Water Framework Directive. Among other things, this calls for good technological solutions for treating process and sewage water from industry, agriculture and households, as well as measures to restore polluted rivers, lakes and fjords.

NIVA activities include:

  • identifying pollution problems and their sources
  • assessing the consequences of pollution and issuing plans of action
  • implementing research and development projects
  • monitoring the effects of implemented measures
  • issuing plans for the protection and use of water deposits
