RRT purchases, processes and exports a significant quantity of non-ferrous metals every year. These metals include aluminium, copper, lead and stainless steel, which are by products of the manufacturing industry in the South Island.

Each metal has its own character and processing requirements. RRT utilize the latest technology to add value to the non-ferrous metals purchased. For example, copper cable arrives at the plant as a tangled mass of scrap cable and leaves as drummed copper granules ready for use in local and overseas foundries.
          
RRT has an aluminum can recycling program. It has over 100 can cages strategically situated in various parts of the South Island. The cans are mechanically sorted and then pressed into bricks, which are exported. RRT is involved in a joint venture with Christchurch City council for the processing of metals from refuse stations and Kerb Side can collection.

RRT over the years has established itself as New Zealand`s leader in recycling of surplus telecommunication equipment. It has contracted to Telecom New Zealand over a number of years and has unique knowledge in the processing and sales of surplus telecommunication equipment. Products such as computer boards removed from telephone systems have value when processed and sold overseas. Gold and other precious metals can be recovered from these boards. RRT is active in dismantling surplus Telecom NZ exchanges and recovering metals for reuse and sale.
The transport sector is a significant provider of non-ferrous metals. In the motor vehicle industry useable metals are recovered from car engines, gearboxes, radiators, batteries, wheels and miscellaneous scrap metals. RRT has scrapped machinery as diverse as large airplanes, container cranes and dry dock doors.
