Oceanography

SHARE

The Oceanography Department specializes in measurement campaigns at sea, on the coast and in aquatic environments. It collects, exploits and applies data to: Determine the nature of the seabed, Know the physical and dynamic parameters of the water (current, swell), Assess the living environment, Assess the situation, studies the pre-project environment, Measure the evolution of the environment, monitors the environment after work, Assess the impact of work or operations on the environment. Teams of engineers and technicians travel all over the world, deploying a wealth of state-of-the-art equipment (vessels, acoustic instruments, sampling devices and diving equipment, etc.).

Campaigns at sea deal with:

  • marine geophysics (single or multibeam bathymetry, reflection seismology, subbottom profiler, magnetometer, jetting),
  • oceanography (current and swell measurements using ADCP, multiparameter probes, meteorology), noise measurement (hydrophones),
  • habitat mapping (with sidescan sonar, subsea video, ROV, diving investigations),
  • ecological inventory (benthos, sea grasses, fixed fauna, avifauna and marine mammals)
  • and sampling (Niskin bottles, grabs, corers, vibrocorers).

Applications

  • Renewable marine energies
  • Protected Marine Areas, Natura 2000 inventory, Marine Parks, Reserves
  • Water treatment discharge monitoring
  • Power stations and nuclear power stations
  • Desalination plants
  • Extraction of granulates at sea
  • Coastline protection
