Oil Spill Detection Service

SHARE

Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) provides operational oil spill detection services based on radar images from satellites. Use of Synthetic Aperture Radar sensor (SAR) from satellites has proven to be an excellent tool to  detect oil slicks, vessels and installations at sea, thus being an efficient tool to assist national authorities in detecting oil discharges and locate potential polluters.  KSAT has provided this operational early warning service to customers since 1996, and in Europe use of satellites for oil spill detection is well established and well integrated within the national and regional oil pollution surveillance and response chains.

The use of this satellite-based application for monitoring has also proven very valuable in the oil industry. Oil companies use the service pro-actively as part of their own monitoring system, and as part of the national monitoring programme,  to detect accidental leakages from offshore installations , pipelines or illegal discharges of vessels close to their installations as early as possible. The analysis results and reports are also used to document that the operation has followed the license requirements.

KSAT has provided an operational early warning service to customers since 1996. The service is used  today operationally by all the operating oil companies on the Norwegian Continental shelf through the Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO), oil companies around the world and all 24 European coastal states through the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) CleanSeaNet Service.
