Oilfield Microbiology
Oilfield Microbial Surveys. Microbial proliferation in oil production systems can cause corrosion, well clogging and reservoir souring, resulting in a considerably loss in productivity and finances. Microbially Induced Corrosion (MIC) can be caused by the proliferation of sulphate-reducing bacteria if left unmonitored and untreated.
With our venture partner NECE, NCIMB can offer a full comprehensive microbiological monitoring package of sampling planktonic and sessile bacterial populations in oil production systems.
In parallel with the microbial surveys, NCIMB can offer laboratory based routine or one-off microbial analysis of most types of liquid sample. Analyses offered include
- GHB/APGHB
- SRB (mesophilic, thermophilic and hyperthermophilic)
- NRB
Other analysis may be available on request, or see our Environmental Services department for available chemical and environmental analysis services.
Microbial proliferation in fuel and fuel components can cause serious problems in machinery from under-performance due to reduced burning efficiency to corrosion through MIC. For this reason, it is important to maintain good house-keeping of storage facilities and pipework and remove any water before proliferation can begin. NCIMB offer a quality assured microbial analysis to nationally recognised standards of fuel and fuel component to aid in the monitoring of fuel quality and problem-solving.
