Performance Assessment Services
Assessing the performance of a waste isolation facility, whether it be a mined geologic repository for disposal of radioactive wastes or a geologic formation selected for the injection and storage of industrial wastes such as CO2, requires identification and analysis of the physical processes (e.g., two-phase flow in a repository horizon) and the events that could cause release of the waste to the accessible environment. Furthermore, since regulatory requirements are typically probabilistic in nature, an estimate of the likelihood of each process and event is required. Identification of key processes and events, along with estimation of their probabilities, are accomplished through the development of scenarios that represent potential future events that can occur and disturb the waste isolation facility, such as human intrusion, tectonics, or volcanism.
INTERA has over 25 years of experience in conducting both single- and multiple-component performance assessment studies. Our expertise includes developing and applying numerical codes that combine the various conceptual and process models into a comprehensive and efficient performance assessment simulation tool. We have completed studies and analyses ranging from single-component studies (e.g., waste package) to total system performance assessments (e.g., waste package through dosimetry) for radioactive waste disposal programs around the world.
Our Performance Assessment Services include:
- features, events, and processes screening and scenario development
- conceptual model development
- process-level modeling in engineered barriers and geosphere
- process model abstraction development
- integration of site characterization and process-level modeling
- uncertainty and sensitivity analyses
- analysis and visualization of simulation results
