Whether the frequently stated figure that ’80% of data has a spatial location’ is correct or an urban myth of GIS, it is clear that for many questions location matters. For example, social and environmental issues are often intertwined and relevant trends in census data can be mapped against health or environmental datasets in order to infer relationships. The same information can be included in models in order to provide extrapolations or predictions as to future conditions. For example areas that are predicted to see rises in population may be mapped against areas of predicted flood risk to calculate potential costs or plan for emergency resources.
However, if there are “lies, damn lies, and statistics” then maps in general and spatial statistics in particular are as capable of deception as they are of enlightenment. Our experience and training can help you formulate your question in a way which considers location. Equally important, it can help ensure that the resulting maps and spatial statistics really do represent what they appear to.
