Seascape Assessment & Marine Planning

SHARE

We seek to ensure that a thorough understanding of seascape character is considered in development proposals.  Our strong understanding of seascape character and independent stance means that we are often called upon by both national and local decision-makers to provide advice on coastal and offshore developments.  Our landscape planners are also involved in undertaking and reviewing SLVIAs for marine and coastal developments, including offshore wind, new tidal technologies and related grid connections.

LUC pioneered the method of Seascape Character Assessment (SCA), building on the established principles of Landscape Character Assessment and applying them to the offshore area.  An understanding of ‘seascape’ is highlighted in the national Marine Policy Statement (2011) as being a key strand of evidence to consider in marine planning.  In 2011 we were the only consultancy member of the Steering Group for the national approach to SCA developed by Natural England.

Putting the approach into practice, we piloted the first SCA in Wales in 2012 which has subsequently informed our work to characterise the Dover Strait – the first international SCA in the world.  At a regional level our ground-breaking work to produce the Seascape Assessment for the South marine plan areas firmly establishes ‘seascape’ as a key policy area and framework for statutory marine planning.  The innovative visual resource mapping we developed as part of the project will be used by the Marine Management Organisation and others as a marine planning tool.
