Spatial Data Conversion: This process involves a technician working with engineering documents ie: plan and profile, field sketches, site plans, as-builts, etc, interpreting the information these documents contain, and converting this information to digital data. The method is called digitizing, however the digitizing process used to create GIS Data is usually done on background aerial photography or orthophotography that is tied to a land survey system. The data captured from the digitizing process is then made to be spatially accurate to the ground, and can be measured in actual feet, miles, and elevation.
