e!Sankey - Sankey Diagrams Creating Software
Visualisation of energy flows and material streams with a Sankey diagram. The most popular software for creating Sankey diagrams. Visualise the material and energy flows or value streams in your company or along the supply chain. Share these appealing diagrams in reports or presentations.
e!Sankey - show the flow.
The software e!Sankey lets you create Sankey diagrams quickly and easily. No matter whether you wish to depict energy flows, material streams, or goods being transported along a supply chain: use e!Sankey to create convincing visualizations for your presentations, reports and publications.
Sankey diagrams are a great way to visualize flows – e.g. energy, material, or cost flows. The width of each arrow in a Sankey diagram is proportional to the flow quantity, i.e. a flow with double the volume as another flow is shown with an arrow twice as wide.
Sankey diagrams immediately draw the attention to the most important flows. They are gaining increasing importance in energy management, facility management, process engineering and in the area of resource efficient manufacturing.
When visualizing costs along a supply chain or within a production plant, they can help to better understand value streams.
e!Sankey can be used to create Sankey diagrams in the following areas of application:
- energy flows (energy balance), energy management, energy efficiency
- heat transfer, heat loss, heat balance
- material flows, e.g. within a production system
- resource efficiency, waste, water/wastewater
- logistics, transport of goods, supply chain analysis
- value streams, cost allocation, visualization of cost flows and added value
- weighted mass flows (i.e. greenhouse gas emissions, concentrations in exhaust gas stream)
e!Sankey is the most widely used software for drawing Sankey diagrams.
More than 8000 users in more than 85 countries rely on the versatile capabilities of e!Sankey.
The numerous features for setting up the diagrams and refining their layout help you create appealing Sankey diagrams.

Using the following operations you can specify your processes in order to calculate entries and flows in your Sankey diagram, e.g. if certain data is missing:
Sum:
Calcuates the sum of all input flows and creates a flow at output arrow.
Merge:
Takes all flows from all incoming arrows and passes them to the output arrow. Flows of the same entry will be summed up.
Difference:
Calculates the difference of the surrounding flows and creates a flow at the output arrow.
Split:
Takes all flows from all input arrows and passes them to the output arros. Flows are split by given ratio.
Drawing Sankey diagrams is easy as pie
Building up Sankey diagrams is intuitive and only requires knowledge of a few basic functions of the software:
- Set a process (node)
- Draw an arrow between the processes
- Drag&drop material or energy flow entries into arrow
- Add quantity of material or energy
The correct width of the Sankey arrows is calculated and drawn automatically based on the flow quantities entered. Proportionality and scaling of flows is ensured, even when elements of the diagram are moved.
A label is created next to the arrow showing flow and flow quantity. It can, however, be adapted in many ways to match your individual style: adapt label font, rotate text, or choose a specific number format.
Many different options for arrowsOnce the Sankey diagram with its arrows whose width is proportional to the flow quantity has been set up, it can be adapted and refined. Many different layout options are available in e!Sankey to make the diagram look good. Some examples:
- Adapt arrow routing: instead of drawing the arrow directly between two nodes insert waypoints to determine the arrow routing. Also, you might want to define that arrows must dock at a specific side of the process symbol
- Arrow heads can be turned on or off, shape and size of the arrow spikes can be set
- Icons or images can be used as process symbols
Meeting your individual taste or existing corporate design specifications: there are many different ways to make your Sankey diagrams more appealing. Sankey diagrams get the message across, and they will make a lasting impression on your audience!
Updating Sankey diagrams with data from Excel sheetsWhen doing monthly reports, or regularly publishing flow data, it is often sufficient to just update the values in the Sankey diagram.
To this end the Live Link to Microsoft Excel can be used (only in e!Sankey pro version): Flows in the Sankey diagram reference into cells in a workbook. When these values in Excel change, the flow quantities are adapted and the arrows in the Sankey diagram updated accordingly.
The new Sankey diagram can be printed, or exported as a high resolution graphic file in various formats (JPG, PNG, GIF, ...).
By the way: this mechanism of updating Sankey diagrams with data fr0m external sources can also be automated using the e!Sankey SDK. This opens new possibilities to integrate Sankey diagrams in other software solutions, such as e.g. energy management software.
