Hydrocarbon Vapour Emergency Ignition Safety

SHARE

This course is designed to prepare ignition teams to effectively deal with uncontrolled vapour plumes that may originate from a variety of sources and processes (oil and gas well drilling and workovers; pipelines; production and/or storage facilities). In July 2008 the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) issued Directive 071, which states that all ignition teams should have certified ignition training.

Emergency ignition procedures are also an integral part of all emergency response plans developed for drilling, servicing and producing oil and gas wells that contain hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Even in relatively low concentrations, H2S is extremely toxic, therefore all operations involving H2S are considered “critical”. While the focus of this course is H2S operations, the course content provides guiding principles applicable to any “uncontrollable flow” situation.

The objectives and outcomes for this course are:

  • Define “uncontrollable flow” as it relates to the oil and gas industry
  • Determine the criteria involved in the decision to ignite an uncontrollable flow
  • Determine the specific properties of produced hydrocarbon fuels as they relate to fire chemistry
  • Determine the use of an emergency ignition kit and the application of each component
  • Demonstrate the use of the emergency ignition kit and the procedures for igniting a gas plume
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely ignite a vapour plume

Course Content

The theory portion will be followed by hands-on “live-fire” ignition training in which participants will ignite propane vapour plumes.

A certificate is issued to each candidate upon successful completion of a written examination (70%) and the practical component will be a pass/fail evaluation.
