OSSA Certified Fall Protection Training
The purpose of this course is to introduce the basic principles of fall prevention and protection, as well as types of fall protection systems available and the most appropriate use of each of them. The program also covers requirements to comply with the current international standards in fall protection.
This is an introductory course only. While persons taking this course would be considered trained in the use of fall protective equipment, they would not be considered competent or qualified for purposes of installing an engineered fall arrest system without further practical training and field experience. Likewise, all persons must be further trained to use fall arrest equipment in strict adherence with individual manufacturers’ instructions, and according to safe work practices.
The objectives and outcomes for this course are to:
- Explain why fall protection measures are important on the worksite
- Describe the different types of falls
- Define the terms “fall protection”, “travel restraint” and “fall arrest”
- Reference the sections of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety code that pertain to fall protection in Alberta
- Identify work situations that require fall protection measures be taken
- List and describe ways of eliminating or controlling fall hazards
- Explain the importance of proper planning
- Determine when proper planning is being applied on a worksite
- Identify fall hazards and recommend appropriate fall protection and fall arrest measures
- Define the term “competent person”
- Explain when an emergency rescue plan is required
