Important Considerations When Sampling With Methanol - Video
The use of methanol to preserve soil samples in the field for the analysis of volatile hydrocarbons is the preferred and required method for most jurisdictions in Canada and even North America. However, this technique doesn't come without its challenges. Unlike filling an empty jar or bottle with sample material, collecting soil in pre-charged methanol vials requires consideration of some key items – the most often overlooked ones are summarized in this video.
Methanol is easily contaminated, so being mindful of the materials and supplies used to sample, transport and store methanol vials is important. Methanol is also considered a dangerous good, so proper care must be taken when offering sample packages for shipment, for the return trip to the laboratory.
