Modern sensor-based sorting systems are superior to traditional manual or sink-float processes for reasons including that they achieve material purities of up to 99.9% in refining the sorted fractions. TOMRA Sorting’s efficient sorting and recycling technology provides benefits for shredder machinery and heavy media operators, plus aluminum resmelters. Shredder operators can create individual fractions out of mixed product which yield much higher market values. Heavy media operators can produce and sell pure final products themselves, meaning their investment in technology is recouped quickly. After wet processing, the aluminum product still contains impurities and its concentration can be improved further using TITECH technology and sold for a considerably higher profit. For smelters, the TITECH x-tract [XRT] removes impurities in the secondary resource to such a high degree of precision that less primary resource is needed to obtain useful aluminum.

Packaging waste is mostly made up of different polymers, beverage cartons, paper and glass. Depending on the country in question, different collection systems apply and the material will invariably arrive in different conditions to the MRF’s (Materials Recovery Facility). However, this does not present us with a problem. At TOMRA Sorting, regardless of the collection system operated, we are able to optimally sort the valuable fractions with high efficiency and purity. We currently operate sorting units at packaging MRF’s in many countries including Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, UK and USA.

Waste Sorting - CRT Glass Sorting

End of life TV sets and computer monitors require to be recycled to maximise the level of material recovery, and to meet the requirements of the EU WEEE Directive. CRT glass is the largest item by weight. However, because of the 2 different types of glass used in CRT manufacture, the glass fractions have to be sorted to achieve a separation of the 2 type of glass, i.e. panel glass sorted from funnel glass. X-TRACT separator is able to sort the panel glass from the funnel glass. It does it by comparing their different atomic densities, and analysing the data from the X-Rays using a bi-chromatic sensor system. X-TRACT is the first industrial application for any dry mechanical density sorting.
