Problem: Organic matter (UV254/TOC) in drinking water can react with chlorine to form harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). Some removal of TOC is achieved through the conventional drinking water treatment processes, while carbon absorption may be used to further enhance the removal of TOC prior to chlorine disinfection.
Solution:
Monitoring organic matter in real-time allows for TOC removal efficiency and water quality to be monitored. Additionally, monitoring in real-time allows for better dosing in the case of PAC (powdered activated carbon) adsorption and hydraulic loading in the case of GAC (granular activated carbon) absorption improving activated carbon lifetime while maximizing the treatment efficiency. Post carbon absorption monitoring can also be used to determine when regeneration is required.
