Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort which aims to provide optimal wellbeing, safety and cost efficiency of those inhaling the air. This cannot be achieved without measuring the air quality by determining the carbon dioxide content of the room.
Air quality can be adversely affected by increased levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulates, or bacteria. If the CO2 concentration is too high, the oxygen present can be displaced. This must be prevented because it would impact the health and comfort of inhabitants of the building, causing them discomfort and possibly breathing difficulties. Air quality can also be negatively affected as a result of increased levels of carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, particulates or bacteria. Therefore, ventilation is necessary in order to reduce the quantity of these unwanted contaminants.
How are Gas Sensors used within HVAC?
In order for HVAC to be implemented in the most economic and safe way we must measure the gases in the air to inform us of how much HVAC we need.
Using a gas sensor to measure the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere inside a building provides an economical way of ensuring that there is sufficient air circulation for us to be safe and comfortable, as well as preventing over-ventilation which can add unnecessary heating or cooling costs.
