Ultrasonic Level Sensor for Plastic Granule Silo
Continuous, non-contact level measurement in plastic granule silos can be challenging due to dust. Build-up on the sensor antenna or transducer can interfere with signal strength, causing erroneous readings.
Such was the case when ABM's partner responded to a plastic manufacturer's request for support.
The existing ultrasonic level sensors were installed in the dust extraction system above the silo roof. Plant staff were manually cleaning the sensors each morning with compressed air to ensure accurate level measurements in their eight (8) granule storage silos. In addition, the sensors were installed in the center of the silos, a less-than-ideal placement as secondary echoes can become problematic.
ABM's ultrasonic level sensors with self-cleaning operation and custom Teflon transducers were recommended.
Retrofitting the sensors into the existing location required a specialized set-up by ABM's partner. Custom parameters and filters in the software eliminated secondary echoes, dust influence, and a large dead zone.
The plant is happy with the accuracy, reliability, and maintenance-free operation of their new ABM level sensors.
