Under Dutch law it is NOT allowed to execute activities without prior notification or permit issuance by the (local) authorities. Occasionally the possibility for experimenting has been granted in the permit within the framework of the companies playing field and the dimensions and features of the facilities.

ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). It applies to those environmental aspects which the organization has control over and which it can be expected to have an influence on.

The EU-directive “Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control” (IPPC-directive 96/61/EC concerning integrated pollution prevention and control). In essence the directive is about minimizing pollution from various industrial sources throughout the European Union. Operators of industrial installations covered by Annex I of the IPPC Directive are required to obtain an authorization (environmental permit) from the authorities in the EU countries. About 50.000 installations are covered by the IPPC Directive in the EU.
