COWI analyses and clarifies complex economic correlations and issues in user-friendly tools and models. For instance, COWI can develop a tool to estimate economic and environmental consequences of different waste management strategies or estimate the CO2 emissions from road and railway transport.

Many citizens are annoyed by noise and vibration from road and rail traffic or from industrial sources. COWI calculates noise levels, prepares noise maps and identifies solutions that can reduce noise annoyance in the environment.

COWI provides consultancy services on the treatment and handling of municipal and industrial wastewater in Denmark and abroad. Detailed knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, combined with automatic on-line control, improves the possibility to increase efficiency of treatment processes. Today, wastewater treatment can be targeted directly towards the immediate composition of wastewater and the effluent criteria for different parameters.

COWI has specialised in the field of nature management which requires close collaboration among the national authorities, municipalities, private agricultural interests and the public.

Execution of civil or structural works are often subject to approved environmental impact assessments (EIA) prior to start-up. COWI has extensive experience in carrying out EIA projects  for structural and civil works. In many countries it is compulsory to undertake environmental impact assessments (EIAs) before starting civil or structural works, especially if there is a risk that the work may have negative impacts on the environment. This applies to new works as well as major extensions of existing civil structures or facilities.

COWI provides services within waste collection, source separation, recycling, thermal treatment, biological treatment and recovery facilities. Coherent waste collection and treatment schemes are necessary if waste is not to become an ever-growing problem. The schemes must provide viable solutions that satisfy users` needs. COWI has taken part in developing the waste collection and treatment sector in a number of European countries. We have hands-on experience from all steps of the handling and disposal route gained via direct involvement in planning and design of full scale solutions.

Waste management planning from policy to technical solution is increasingly relevant due to the need for cost-effective and environmental sustainable solutions organised via PPP. Worldwide, there is a growing need for sustainable and coherent solutions to municipal and industrial waste management problems. COWI`s experience in waste management planning ranges from policy-making and institutional development to technical design of integrated solutions for the handling and disposal of waste.
