This document presents technical overviews of 12 passive sampling technologies. It describes each technology’s basis of operation, intended applications, advantages, limitations, and development status. Contacts for additional information are provided. This overview is an outgrowth of interest and information generated in preparation of the ITRC Technical and Regulatory Guidance for Using Polyethylene Diffusion Bag Samplers to Monitor VOCs in Groundwater in February 2004. While the initial foc

Field trials of a new commercially available diffusive ground-water sampling device were conducted at two industrial properties in the Blue Ridge Province of North Carolina. The test sites have extensive monitoring well networks and more than five years of historical water quality data. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including purgeable aromatics (petroleum hydrocarbons) and halogens (chlorinated solvents) have impacted the ground water of the subject properties. These target compounds wer

MWHS Americas, Inc. (MWH) was contracted by Dolver Company, Inc. to perform a Point Source Bailer Demonstration at Mather Air Force Base (Mather). This demonstration was initiated to evaluate no-purge technology and indicate the feasibility of using the HydraSleeve no-purge samplers as an alternative groundwater sampling method. On June 18, 2002, eight HydraSleeve point source bailers were deployed in eight groundwater monitoring wells at the former Mather by MWH personnel. On June 19, 2002, the

This report describes the activities and results of a field demonstration of six different diffusion and grab groundwater sampling devices at the former McClellan Air Force Base (McClellan), located in Sacramento, California. Analytical results from these samplers are compared to ‘baseline’ analytical results from samples collected using conventional (low-flow and three-casing-volume purge) techniques for all analytes. As described at the beginning of Section 6, conventional techniques repre

Polyethylene diffusion bag (PDB) samplers are low-density polyethylene bags containing deionized water, used to collect water samples in groundwater wells for laboratory analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). PDB samplers are passive devices, relying on the movement of groundwater from the aquifer or water-bearing zone through the screen or open interval of a well. VOCs in groundwater diffuse across the bag material until concentrations within the bag reach equilibrium with those in the

Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. (Parsons ES) was retained by the US Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence Technology Transfer Division (AFCEE/ERT) to perform an evaluation of passive groundwater diffusion sampling technology. The diffusion sampler evaluation was funded under Contract F11623-94-D0024, Delivery Order RL72, as part of the AFCEE/ERT Remedial Process Optimization (RPO) demonstration project being performed at six Air Force bases (AFBs) nationwide. One of these bases, McClel

This document is intended to facilitate the use of polyethylene diffusion bag (PDB) samplers for long-term monitoring (LTM). The guidelines presented in Sections 2 and 3 relate to appropriate implementation, data interpretation, and regulatory issues of concern.

Although diffusion samplers can be useful for many different activities and have membranes composed of various materials, this discussion primarily concerns the use of low density polyethylene LDPE) bags filled with deionized water a

The ITRC in conjunction with the USGS, US EPA, US Army Corp of Engineers, and other prominent federal and state groups have released a comprehensive document, based on significant case studies and backed up by controlled laboratory testing, for the use of polyethylene membrane passive diffusion samplers, such as the EQUILIBRATOR Diffusion Sampler manufactured by EON Products, Inc.

Part 1 of the report consists of the comprehensive report on the science of diffusion sampling.

What Is It?

The HydraSleeve sampler is designed to collect representative water samples from monitoring wells without purging. The disposable sampler collects a discreet sample from only the `fresh formation` water in the screened interval of the well. It is fast, inexpensive, simple to use, generates no purge water and collects a sample suitable for all analytical parameters.

Why It Works

The accepted protocol for sampling monitoring wells has required the removal of 3 to 5
