Ecological Risk Assessment Services

Intrinsik has scientists who work exclusively in the area of ecological risk assessment (ERA). They have completed aquatic and terrestrial ERAs in Canada, the United States and internationally. These assessments evaluated risk from contaminated sites, airborne emissions, leachate, runoff, land application of sludges, liquid effluents, and pesticides. These projects have included evaluation of legacy issues (such as historical contamination), spills, product application in natural environments, current operational releases, and proposed future releases associated with retrofits or new facilities. The breadth of experience of our staff on past projects ranges from simple screening level evaluation of small contaminated sites, to leading large, complex, wide area ERA studies, covering hundreds of square kilometres.

Human Biomonitoring Services

Intrinsik has conducted biomonitoring/evaluation of exposure studies in several Canadian communities as a means of measuring the exposure of individuals to chemicals such as arsenic, lead and mercury.  An evaluation of exposure is a study that examines the level of an individual’s internal exposure to selected chemicals that they encounter.  These types of studies are sometimes described as biomonitoring studies because they focus on quantifying exposure of humans to chemicals by measuring the amount of a chemical that is in an individual’s biological fluids or tissues (e.g., blood, urine, hair).  These types of evaluations of exposure through biomonitoring have advantages to environmental monitoring (such as measuring chemicals in soil, air and water) as they provide information on the actual exposures experienced by people and account for exposures from all potential sources, pathways and routes that a person encounters.

Human Health Risk Assessment Services

Intrinsik is one of the leading human health risk assessment (HHRA) firms in North America, with significant expertise is applying the risk assessment paradigm to a large variety of sites to evaluate the potential for human health risks. Intrinsik scientists have completed HHRAs of diverse sizes in Canada, the United States and internationally. These assessments evaluated risk from contaminated sites, airborne emissions, leachate, runoff, land application of sludges, liquid effluents, and new product formulations.

Legal Support Services

Intrinsik can provide a multitude of scientific and consulting services tailored to the requirements of legal professionals in support of environmental boards and tribunals, and personal injury or class action litigation arising from environmental, occupational, domestic, medical, or other exposure to potentially hazardous substances and agents.

Peer Reviews Services

Government, industry and other consulting firms regularly seek out Intrinsik staff to provide peer review services. Completing a peer review should result in a higher quality product and improve the probability of timely acceptance of documents by regulatory agencies, lawyers, purchasers, or other clients.

Public Engagement and Risk Communication

Public engagement in environmental health issues is at an all-time high. Effective public engagement raises the quality of the decision-making process. Ineffective public engagement can result in community outrage, lack of trust in the decision-making process, and delays and cancellations of projects. Social media and on-line sources of information are playing significant role in a new era of public engagement in decision-making. There is a dearth of information, and often misinformation, available to the public.
