Most small towns, all over the world, utilize lagoons for treating their wastewater. Many rural industries also utilize lagoons for storm-water and wastewater treatment. While industrial plants may be able to pay for activated sludge treatment of one design or another, small municipalities simply do not have a choice in treating their small populations’ wastes. If the town’s population is not
growing, the costs imposed for maintaining a wastewater plant are just not viable on

Old municipal and industrial wastewater lagoons have the tendency to build islands of sludge at various locations around the lagoon. It is most common for older lagoons to build such islands wherever wastewater enters the lagoons. Of course, this is because the solids entering the lagoon have enough weight to fall out of the water as flow velocity is reduced, so the solids pile up just after entering the lagoon. Sometimes these sludge islands will build very near a surface aerator because the

Wastewater treatment plants are constantly facing the battle of reducing sludge while trying to keep the cost of energy down. The city of Meridian, Mississippi, which operates two wastewater treatment plants, used to fall into this category until it was introduced to the Sewper Rx, a patented bio-augmentation process designed to reduce noxious odor and organic sludge build-up, while improving effluent quality, in the summer of 2005
